Capítulo 5 · Lección 5.5 · Condicionales con if

Condicionales en inglés: if + presente, if + pasado (y when sin will)

Después de if y when, nada de will.

Con if hablas de lo que pasa si se cumple algo. Si es una verdad general o algo probable, usas presente: If it rains, I’ll stay home. Si es imaginario o poco probable, usas pasado + would: If I had money, I would travel.

La trampa del hispanohablante: en español dices «cuando llegue» o «si llueve», y en inglés se tiende a meter will. Después de if, when, as soon as y before va presente, aunque hables del futuro.

La regla: Verdad general: if + presente, presente. Probable: if + presente, will. Imaginario: if + pasado, would. Nunca will después de if o when.

Los tres condicionales básicos

TipoFórmulaEjemplo
Cero (siempre es así)if + presente, presenteIf you heat ice, it melts.
Primero (probable, futuro)if + presente, will + verboIf it rains, I’ll stay home.
Segundo (imaginario)if + pasado, would + verboIf I had more time, I would learn French.

Con be en el segundo condicional se usa were para todos: If I were you… (en el habla también se oye «If I was», pero «If I were you» es la fórmula fija para dar consejos).
